Living Coral | Pantone Color of the Year 2019

Pantone says, "an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge." We say: Living Coral is the colour of sunsets and sunrises; excitement and hopefulness, it's the colour of warm beach holidays, the colour that brightens up a dark blue winter's night.

2018's was complex and regal with purple Ultra Violet; 2017 fresh and clean with zesty Greenery and 2016, and anomaly year 2016 which gave us both the playful, youthful Rose Quartz pink and Serenity blue.

This year's colour may at first seem engineered and artificially bright, but it can be found across nature in our favourite sunset peonies; the Pacific ocean reefs through to the burned terracotta in Georgia O'Keeffe's work.

Coral is naturally associated with summer, as it goes so well with sunshine, heat and a nice golden tan. It doesn't have to be limited to summer, however, and we have used shades of coral that flow naturally through Autumn to bring colour to weddings in London's darker months. This Chuppah (below) used autumnal leaves in rusted coral to warm up and enliven this stunning Jewish wedding.

"Coral is escapist," says Hayford & Rhodes Managing Director Joanna Rhodes. "It's one of the colours we dream of when we think about packing it all in and escaping to a tropical paradise: Coral in the sea, coral Hibiscus, coral hummingbirds; coral-painted toenails as you walk in the sand and sunset... I adore coral. It's warming, life-affirming and timeless. Coral sunset peonies were my focal-point flower at my wedding in 2011, and the floral designs we created still don't look dated."

Coral sits between orange and pink, and can be paired with elements of both, including bright, Jaffa orange; burned ochre orange; baby pastel pinks through to dark, plummy and raspberry pinks. Against dark browns, dark navy and taupe, coral throws out warmth without being too garish. If you're daring, pair coral with bright reds, with heaps of dark green foliage to soften the clash. See our take on Living Coral on our Pinterest board.
